Critical Analysis of Reading Blog - Share this Book

Over the past week or so, I read this book for class by CIPR, “Share This: The Social Media Handbook for PR Professionals.” The book had some nice information about Social media as a whole, but one of the things that jumped out at me in the beginning was the numbers they threw out at you. I did not realize that more than seventy percent of Internet population these days uses social media. When you hear such a high percentage of people using social media, you do not know how to react. Is it good that so many people are keeping up with technology and communicating via the web or is it kind of scary that face-to-face communication is diminishing?

It is hard to say, and people’s answers will vary depending who you talk to, but I think it is both good and bad for the world. I think social media, with how fast information can be transmitted to society, is very useful because there are times when people need info up to the minute. I also believe that it is harmful to us because people these days are falling in love with social media and forgetting to enjoy the world around them. There needs to continue to be a good balance between real world experiences and social media.

Another number that blew me away was when they said Fifty-seven percent of people talked more online than they do in real life. It’s unbelievable to think that more than half of the population across the globe talk more on the internet to people than they do to people in person. Face-to-face communication is fading, and my generation of people are becoming more and more awkward in those situations. With one out of every nine people in the world being on Facebook and one out of every thirty-five people on Twitter, it is frightening that the next generation might not ever use direct communication with their peers.

After reading this book, I realized that technology and social media have changed the landscape and the way that we communicate, and it will continue to improve it even more as time goes on. Social media allows us to build relationships with people that we have never met in person and network with people across the globe, and it is empowering the online voice.
