Image result for baseballBaseball is America's pastime. The game has been around for ages and has become the most popular sport on campus. When the weather is nice there is nothing better then relaxing with family and friends and going to a baseball game. Whether that is an Ohio Northern baseball game, a minor league game or even a major league game. Just like across the United States, baseball has become popular at Ohio Northern University. The Polar Bear baseball team was the highest ranked team on the Ohio Northern campus this past school year. The baseball team got up to sixteenth in the country this past season and finished the season ranked number eighteen in the country. Now for a little background on the team:

Wander Field is the home of the Ohio Northern Polar Bear baseball team. The field is named after 1924 graduate Ronald “Soc” Wander, who was an ONU trustee. Ronald Wander donated the funds so the Polar Bear baseball team could construct a new field. The field in one of the best fields Ohio Athletic Conference.

The coach of Ohio Northern's baseball program is Gene Stechschulte, who just finished his fourth season as head baseball coach at Ohio Northern University. Stechschulte is the 24th head coach in ONU baseball history, but is just the fifth head coach since 1971. In his fourth season, Stechschulte led the Polar Bears to a 30-9 record and a 12-6 mark in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The 2015 season for the Polar Bears was one they will definitely remember both positively and negatively. The baseball team led by seniors Daniel Belliveau, Jack LaMarca and junior Nicholas Eltzroth had an outstanding season where they won thirty games for the first time since 1995. Considering the team had a losing record just two seasons ago shows that the team is on the rise. The 2015 was cut short for the Polar Bears though because of a rule technicality that made them lose out on a tie breaker to Baldwin Wallace for the final spot in the Ohio Athletic Conference postseason tournament. Once the Polar Bears were out of the conference playoffs that also mean the Polar Bears were eliminated from the NCAA tournament. Having had such a great season and getting ranked so highly by the national poll this really put a bitter taste in the mouths of the ONU baseball players. There were teams that made the NCAA tournament ONU had beaten and also were ranked higher.
